Urging the government and industry to phase out chick killing
In this Member’s Statement, Amanda Dorn speaks about the hidden cruelty of the egg industry and the routine killing of millions of male chicks every year in Australia.
The statement highlights how male chicks are deemed economically worthless because they cannot lay eggs and are commonly killed within hours of hatching through maceration. Amanda Dorn welcomes the introduction of in-ovo sexing technology, which can identify the sex of chicks before hatching and prevent suffering from occurring.
Amanda Dorn also calls on governments to support the rollout of this technology across the industry and establish a legislative end date for the killing of day-old male chicks, arguing that once humane alternatives exist, there can be no justification for continuing such a cruel practice.
