Racehorse cruelty exposed: who is holding the industry accountable?

Hon Amanda Dorn MLC is calling for independent animal welfare oversight following disturbing revelations about the treatment of racehorses in Western Australia.

Prominent WA racehorse trainer Mike Santich was recently disqualified from racetracks worldwide for five months after admitting to striking a horse during trackwork at Ascot. Further previously unpublished footage has now emerged showing Santich repeatedly whipping a horse, raising serious concerns about what can happen to animals within the racing industry when nobody is watching.

Amanda says the case exposes a fundamental problem with the current system. Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) is responsible for fostering and supporting the viability of the racing industry and has oversight for the TAB, while also having responsibility for promoting animal welfare and racing integrity.
