Strengthening the Cat Act to protect cats and support frontline charities

In this Member’s Statement, Hon Amanda Dorn MLC, Member for the Animal Justice Party, calls for stronger cat welfare laws in Western Australia.

She highlights the thousands of cats and kittens lost, abandoned, surrendered or born into unwanted litters, while inconsistent enforcement places enormous pressure on shelters and rescues.

Amanda recognises Cat Haven, WA’s only open-admission cat shelter, which cares for more than 8,500 cats and kittens each year. She calls for consistent enforcement of desexing, microchipping and registration requirements, affordable desexing, better public education, greater government support, and community participation in the Cat Act review to improve outcomes for cats.
