Considering our cockatoos

Like most wild animals, black cockatoos need water at the start and at the end of every day. But in Perth, that simple need is becoming harder to meet.

And that's why we are acknowledging the Town of Victoria Park, which is the recent 2025 winner of the National Awards for Local Government in Environmental and Sustainability, for its innovative Cockitrough.

The troughs are mounted four metres high to keep birds safe from predators, and each one offers shallow drinking platforms and a place to gather, hydrate and thrive.

Several Cockitroughs are already installed around Perth and they are saving lives. The Animal Justice Party urges all local councils to adopt this initiative for an elevated hydration station for all birds. Let us protect our black cockatoos and ensure they have the water they need.
