International Orangutan Day & Protecting our Black Cockatoos
On International Orangutan Day, Amanda marked the occasion by celebrating these “persons of the forest” and raising awareness of the grave threats they face, from deforestation to the illegal pet trade.
The survival of the orangutan is under relentless pressure, not unlike our native species in WA: the black cockatoo. With habitat destruction from land clearing, urban development and mining driving them to the brink, the black cockatoo is teetering on the edge of extinction. Just like the orangutan, the cockatoo is fighting for survival against human-led destruction.
Amanda called on the WA Government to act — to change the way we consume, to stop ripping apart habitats, and to stand up for species who cannot speak for themselves. Protecting our native wildlife must be a priority, before it’s too late.
