West Australians are done with dog racing - it’s official

Hon Amanda Dorn outlines the closure of submissions to the Western Australian parliamentary inquiry into greyhound racing, marking a pivotal moment for scrutiny through the committee process.

She highlights compelling public sentiment, citing the largest survey of its kind conducted by DemosAU in partnership with Free The Hounds and GREY2K USA. The survey of 2,895 Western Australians found 60% strongly support phasing out greyhound racing, with support consistent across all demographics and political affiliations.

Amanda emphasises this is not a fringe position but a clear mainstream view. She attributes shifting attitudes to serious animal welfare concerns, including a 155% increase in on-track deaths between 2022 and 2023, and dozens more deaths recorded in 2025.

She also criticises the use of $33 million annually in taxpayer funds to prop up the industry, noting most respondents oppose this spending. She concludes that phasing out greyhound racing is rational, fiscally responsible and morally overdue.
